Eric Shinseki Resigns

Now that Republicans have thrown veteran Eric Shinseki under the bus, will they go back to Benghazi, or the Post Office, or tearing down renewable energy, or repealing the ACA, or asking about the birth certificate, or asking for more tax breaks for billionaires, or demanding more biblically based laws, or going after single mothers, or denying school lunch for the kiddies, or privatizing more prisons, or...cutting more veteran's benefits?

Tip o' the hat to David's Snarky Political Place.

Woman Shot In Walmart When Gun Falls From Idiot’s Pants
A woman was accidentally shot in a Walmart store in Indiana and subsequently suffered an injury to her arm after a holstered handgun fell from a man’s pants, causing the weapon to discharge inside the business located on the west side of Columbus.

56-year-old Tony E. Ward told police that a 22-caliber handgun, for which he has a permit and kept in a holster, fell from his waistband while he was shopping and discharged, Lt. Matt Myers, spokesman for Columbus Police Department said.

MOAR GUNZ here!

It's The Price Of FREEDUMB!

It is perhaps too easy to forget how many times this has happened. The horrific mass murder at a movie theater in Colorado in July 2012, another at a Sikh temple in Wisconsinthat August, another at a manufacturer in Minneapolis that September—and then the unthinkable nightmare at a Connecticut elementary school that December—were some of the latest in an epidemic of such gun violence over the last three decades. Since 1982, there have been at least 70 mass shootings across the country, with the killings unfolding in 30 states from Massachusetts to Hawaii. Thirty-three of these mass shootings have occurred since 2006. Seven of them took place in 2012, and another five occurred in 2013, including inSanta Monica, California, and at the Washington Navy Yard. The first five months of 2014 brought another bloodbath at Fort Hood, Texas, and mass killings in northern and southernCalifornia.

MOAR GUNZ! here.

Joe The Plumber To UCSB Parents: 'Your Dead Kids Don't Trump' My Guns

These paranoid, small-dicked mofos wouldn't know the Constitution if a raving libbie bonked 'em on the head with it.

Once again, this "plumber" has demonstrated to the world why John McCain screwed Americans by associating hissef with Wasilla Barbie and this butt-crack "plumber" and empowering them with the ability to make thinking people PUKE every time they open their pieholes.

Here's what this heartless, selfish, raving terd said today:

In an open letter published Tuesday on the website Barbwire, Wurzelbacher went out of his way to explain to the victims' parents that the deaths won't undermine his "Constitutional rights."

"I am sorry you lost your child. I myself have a son and daughter and the one thing I never want to go through, is what you are going through now," wrote Wurzelbacher, who became something of a mascot for John McCain's failed 2008 presidential campaign. "But: As harsh as this sounds – your dead kids don’t trump my Constitutional rights."

Laugh at his selfish ass here.

Trying My Hand At A War On Drugs...

How'd I do?

At Fox "News", It's Always The Fault Of The Gays. Or O'Bama.

Reality television psychologist Dr. Robi Ludwig asserted to Fox News that a mass shooting in California over the weekend may have been triggered because the suspect could not cope with his “homosexual impulses.”

And The Massacres Continue

A dweeb rich young adult who was coddled his whole life decided that, since wimmin' didn't like his magnificent self, he'd just go on his own personal jihad. He wound up killing 6 and injuring several other innocent peeps. Then the coward took his life. What follows is a brief commentary by Michael Moore, who has spoken of this type of gun violence before. Usually, the gun nuts attack what he says. I'm sure this time will be no different. Meanwhile the madness continues, because the NRA's solution to continuing gun violence is 1). moar guns, 2). moar prisons, 3). bigger guns. It should be apparent by now that this approach don't work.

With due respect to those who are asking me to comment on last night's tragic mass shooting at UCSB in Isla Vista, CA -- I no longer have anything to say about what is now part of normal American life. Everything I have to say about this, I said it 12 years ago: We are a people easily manipulated by fear which causes us to arm ourselves with a quarter BILLION guns in our homes that are often easily accessible to young people, burglars, the mentally ill and anyone who momentarily snaps. We are a nation founded in violence, grew our borders through violence, and allow men in power to use violence around the world to further our so-called American (corporate) "interests." The gun, not the eagle, is our true national symbol. While other countries have more violent pasts (Germany, Japan), more guns per capita in their homes (Canada [mostly hunting guns]), and the kids in most other countries watch the same violent movies and play the same violent video games that our kids play, no one even comes close to killing as many of its own citizens on a daily basis as we do -- and yet we don't seem to want to ask ourselves this simple question: "Why us? What is it about US?" Nearly all of our mass shootings are by angry or disturbed white males. None of them are committed by the majority gender, women. Hmmm, why is that? Even when 90% of the American public calls for stronger gun laws, Congress refuses -- and then we the people refuse to remove them from office. So the onus is on us, all of us. We won't pass the necessary laws, but more importantly we won't consider why this happens here all the time. When the NRA says, "Guns don't kill people -- people kill people," they've got it half-right. Except I would amend it to this: "Guns don't kill people -- Americans kill people." Enjoy the rest of your day, and rest assured this will all happen again very soon.

Rightie-Tighties Have Trouble With Truthiness

Scientist Calls Out Daily Caller's "Complete Distortion" Of Her Biodiversity Study

Man-made global warming is having drastic impacts on biodiversity around the world, putting species at risk and driving mass extinction according to several studies. As climate changes, species are driven out of their primary habitats into different regions where they can't always adapt. As a result, the globe is currently experiencing the worst rate of species die-offs since the end of the dinosaur age, and studies show that climate change could further cause an extinction rate of up to one-third of the world's flora and fauna species.

The Daily Caller's Michael Bastasch published a May 15 article that contradicts this basic concept, titled "Global Warming Is Increasing Biodiversity Around The World." The article claims: "A new study published in the journal Science has astounded biologists: global warming is not harming biodiversity, but instead is increasing the range and diversity of species in various ecosystems."

The lead author of the study cited, Dr. Maria Dornelas from the Centre for Biological Diversity, responded in a statement to Media Matters that the Daily Caller article was "a complete distortion of what we say" and that there "is nothing in our paper to even suggest that climate change is beneficial for biodiversity".

Latest Right-Wing Propaganda Ploy: Bullies of the Christian Right Pretend They're Oppressed

They act like they are the real victims.

The religious right has many potent weapons in its arsenal—sanctimony, bigot-pandering, and dishonesty rank right up at the top—but lately, pretending to be victimized seems to top the list. We have a soundbite-driven, points-scoring political culture that resists deeper analysis of the issues, making it perfect for bad actors to muddy up the issues. All you do is accuse your opposition of doing what you, in fact, are actually doing. If you want to oppress people, claim you’re being oppressed. If you want to deprive people of their rights, whine about how your rights are supposedly under attack. The idea is to confuse audiences about who is actually oppressing who long enough that they give up actually bothering to learn the truth. Unfortunately, it can be devastatingly effective propaganda.

Gov. Bobby Jindal’s commencement speech at Liberty University was a masterpiece in this type of dishonest projection. Posing as a champion of free speech and freedom of religion, he actually made a chilling argument in favor of stripping both of those freedoms away from ordinary Americans, businesses and anyone who might disagree with turning this country into a theocratic state. He started by defending Hobby Lobby for trying to strip contraception coverage out of their employees’ own healthcare plans. “Under the Obama regime,” he argued, “you have protection under the First Amendment as an individual, but the instant you start a business, you lose those protections. And that brings us to the second front in this silent war: the attack on our freedom of association as people of faith.”

It’s all nonsense, of course. In fact, Hobby Lobby’s intention here is to reduce religious freedom by forcing their employees to adhere to certain religious rules in order to get the benefits they already earned. ( They have a history of trying to impose their religious dogma on non-believers through other means as well.) The only people in any real danger of losing freedom are women, who are in danger of losing their freedom to use their insurance benefits in a way that fits their personal beliefs.

But Jindal was just warming up, claiming the “Obama administration” was gunning to decide “who can preach the Gospel.” This outrageous conspiracy theory was justified, in his opinion, by supposed other attacks on “free speech,” namely that TV networks are reluctant to house the opinions of open bigots. “The left no longer wants to debate. They simply want to silence us,” he said of Phil Robertson from Duck Dynasty, who was never silenced and has, to this date, been allowed to say any fool thing he wants. But he was briefly suspended from A&E, leading conservatives to decide that “free speech” means you have a right to your own TV show.

Jindal worked this entitled-to-a-TV-show argument in by referencing the Benham brothers, who lost a show they were working on for HGTV when it came out that they are hateful homophobes. Jindal called this a “demonstration of intolerance from the entertainment industry.”

Why We're Fat: I Went to the Nutritionists' Annual Confab and It Was Catered by McDonald's

Our national nutrition experts are in bed with Big Food.

One recent Friday afternoon, in a Mariott Hotel ballroom in Pomona, California, I watched two women skeptically evaluate their McDonald's lunches. One peered into a plastic bowl containing a salad of lettuce, bacon, chicken, cheese, and ranch dressing. The other arranged two chocolate chip cookies and a yogurt parfait on a napkin. "Eww," she said, gingerly stirring the layers of yogurt and pink strawberry goop. The woman with the salad nodded in agreement, poking at a wan chicken strip with her plastic fork.

When I asked how they were liking their lunches, both women grimaced and assured me that they "never" go to McDonald's. So why were they eating it today? Well, they didn't really have a choice. The women were registered dietitians halfway through day two of the annual conferenceof the California Dietetic Association (CDA). They were hoping to rack up some of the continuing education credits they needed to maintain their certification. McDonald's, the conference's featured sponsor, was the sole provider of lunch. "I guess it's good to know that they have healthier options now," said the woman with the salad.

As I wandered the exhibition hall, I saw that McDonald's wasn't the only food company giving away freebies. Cheerful reps at the Hershey's booth passed out miniature cartons of chocolate and strawberry milk. Butter Buds offered packets of fake butter crystals. The California Beef Council guy gave me a pamphlet on how to lose weight by eating steak. Amy's Naturals had microwave brownies. The night before, Sizzler, California Pizza Kitchen, Boston Market, and other chain restaurants had hosted a free evening buffet for conference-goers: "Local Restaurant Samplings for Your Pleasure."

And that wasn't all. The sessions—the real meat and potatoes of the conference—had food industry sponsors as well. The Wheat Council hosted a presentation about how gluten intolerance was just a fad, not a real medical problem. The International Food Information Council—whose supporters include Coca-Cola, Hershey, Yum Brands, Kraft, and McDonald's—presented a discussion in which the panelists assured audience members that genetically modified foods were safe and environmentally sustainable. In "Bringing Affordable Healthier Food to Communities," Walmart spokespeople sang the praises of (what else?) Walmart.

More of the madness here.

Our Ruling Ideology Is Denial

Future generations will look back on this decade and wonder how the world didn’t act sooner to fight global warming and economic depression—the twin threats to civilization.

The Economics Of Fascism

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economics_of_fascism

A Study In American Fascism: The War Against Tessla

Republicans hate regulations nearly as much as they hate taxation, and according to their Libertarian mindset, the concept of government interference in free market capitalism is tantamount to seizing the one percent’s wealth and assets and giving everything to undocumented immigrants, gays, and people of color. However, during the past year Republicans have interfered with private businesses simply because the companies failed to adhere to GOP regulations against union representation and renewable energy sources. In Republican-controlled states, GOP legislatures have forbidden business owners from providing overtime pay, sick leave, or raising the minimum wage, and still have the temerity to decry tyrannical government interference in business over gender pay equity, attempts to raise the minimum wage, or enforcing 14thAmendment protections against discrimination in the workplace. In a relatively new form of Republican fascism and regulatory overreach, Republican states have told consumers what they can and cannot purchase, and enacted regulations forbidding one company from conducting business in their states.

Missouri is the latest state to attempt to ban residents from purchasing cars from Tesla by inserting new language in an existing bill that forces consumers to buy new cars and trucks only through franchised dealerships. The legislation, HB 1124was passed late last year without anti-Tesla language, but Republicans resorted to their now-typical stealth tactic and slipped new language to put a screeching halt to Tesla selling cars in Missouri; a clear violation of Republican libertarian policy against government dictating how free market capitalism is conducted. The Missouri senate version of the bill passed without the public’s knowledge and moves to the House for passage without debate because powerful car dealers and the oil industry ordered Republicans to protect their monopoly on pollution-causing vehicles without the public’s knowledge.

Powerful auto manufacturers already paid the Chris Christie administration to shut down Tesla in New Jersey because the company does not use middlemen (franchises), and the Christie administration supported banning Tesla because Republicans contend “Tesla shouldn’t have the right to unilaterally change the way cars are sold.” Free market capitalism is not free in Republicans’ minds and they will not allow Tesla, or any company to sell cars unless manufacturers profit from dealership franchise fees, dealerships profit as middleman, and the oil industry profits from selling gasoline and oil that Tesla CEO Elon Musk clearly understands is the rationale behind forbidding consumers from purchasing what they want. According to Musk, the electric cars need far less service than gas-powered cars so the need for a dealership franchise profiting off of regularly scheduled dealership maintenance is non-existent. He said, ”There are no oil, spark plug or fuel filter changes, no tune-ups and no smog checks needed for an electric car. Overcharging people for unneeded servicing (often not even fixing the original problem) is rampant within the industry and happened to me personally on several occasions when I drove gasoline cars.”

The right’s sad Obamacare transition: As good news rolls in, what to do?

I don’t mean to belabor this point, but the degree to which conservative media are exhibiting confirmation bias when it comes to news about the Affordable Care Act is both darkly amusing and instructive.

Yesterday’s hearing of the House Energy and Commerce Committee was an embarrassment for House Republicans. The insurance industry executives brought before the committee testified that premium payment rates for Obamacare enrollees ranged between 80 and 90 percent, which flatly debunked a report released last week by Republicans claiming that just 67 percent had paid. The insurance representatives “refused to go along with” Republican plans to publicly flense the ACA, noted the New York Times, “and surprised Republican critics of the law by undercutting some of their arguments against it.”

The hearing was also an embarrassing moment for the conservative media outlets that hyped the bogus Republican report on premium payments. Those same outlets covered yesterday’s hearing, but took special care to omit any mention of any of the positive Obamacare news that emerged from it.

You Must Feel So Proud, NRA

A man stole a 50-pound vinyl peace sign from a Mystic playground built in memory of a Sandy Hook shooting victim then called the slain girl's mother to tell her why he did it, according to one of the playground's supporters.

William Lavin, the organizer of the "Where Angels Play Foundation" that built the playground honoring Grace McDonnell, said Lynn McDonnell received a phone call from a man on Tuesday claiming he had stolen the sign from the playground because he believes the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School was a hoax. The caller told McDonnell her daughter "never existed."

The playground, which was opened on April 27, is one of 26 the foundation is building in Connecticut, New York and New Jersey to honor the victims of the Dec. 14, 2012 massacre.

Useful Idiots For The Oligarchy

Don't miss the latest Jonathan Chait at New York mag on the educated ignorance of the right when it comes to science:

"There is no issue where educated ignorance is on more perfect display than watching the conservative movement confront scientific evidence of climate change. Educated ignorance is not the same thing as the regular kind of ignorance. It takes real talent to master. George F. Will and Charles Krauthammer are two of the intellectual giants of the right, former winners of the Bradley Foundation’s $250,000 annual prize, Washington Post columnists, and Fox News All-Star panelists. They numbered among the select conservative intellectuals chosen to dine with newly elected president Barack Obama in 2009.

"On their Fox News All-Star Panel appearance this week, both men discussed the U.S. National Climate Assessment, which they dismissed with various irritable mental gestures. Their evasions and misstatements, clothed in faux-erudition, offer a useful entrance point to study the current state of the right-wing mind.

"What follows is an annotated analysis of Will and Krauthammer’s remarks, the intellectual quality of which starts off low, and grows increasingly and even frighteningly so as the program progresses." Read it.

Isn't it sad that America is sinking into the cesspool of willful ignorance?

YOU GO DON LEMON!

CNN host explodes after guest denies calling Michelle Obama’s Nigerian girl tweets ‘cheap’

Frequent CNN "contributor", the conservaterd Will Cain, joined the rightwing hate-fest against people using social media to increase awareness of the kidnapped schoolgirls in Nigeria.

Don Lemon was having none of that nonsense.

“What have you done?” Lemon asked Cain. “What did you do for those girls? What did you do personally for them? If you’re so outraged by it, what have you done? Besides sit here on television and criticized other people’s efforts, if you’re so concerned about it, what have you done?”

“I’m pointing out something that’s important, Don,” Cain argued.

“If you’re pointing it out, do something to help!” Lemon shouted. “Rather than coming on and criticizing, do something to help!”

“I just think that what he said was a dog whistle for, to say — you’re talking about the first lady,” the CNN host added. “Will, I’m not stupid, and I’ve been on television with you before, and I know your game. And that’s what you were talking about.”

Mundey Politickal Funnies

Shame On Us

One in four homeless Americans are veterans. 1900 veterans have committed suicide so far in 2014. Congress killed veterans' health, education, and jobs bills. Shameful.

I have an idea. Lets stop saying "I Support The Troops™" and lets start actually supporting the troops.
